Genes Trailhead (Genes Main and Genes West trailheads) is located in the Calico Basin area of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, about 25 minutes west of Las Vegas. This is a non-fee area, not on the Scenic Loop Road.

From town, drive out towards Red Rocks. From West Charleston Blvd at Highway 215 (the western beltway; Table 1, Site 516), drive west on Charleston 3.8 miles to Calico Basin Road (Site 0520). Turn right onto Calico Basin Road and drive north for about 0.4 miles. The road dips into Calico Wash, then begins to curve to left. This is Genes Main Trailhead. Park just past the wash on either side of the road (Site 1372).

For Genes West Trailhead, continue on Calico Basin Road for another 0.24 miles. The road curves left just past the main trailhead, then curves left again. When the road straightens, park on the right. There are no signs; just look for the trail leading north into the desert. Park here; this is the Genes West Trailhead (Site 1387).

The two Genes trailheads provide paved access to hikes in the eastern portion of Calico Basin. A number of unmarked trails crisscross the area, providing access to several miles of relatively easy hiking. Mountain bikers and horse riders also use this area.

Trails: Genes Trail, Peak 3844 Loop Trail. Numerous intersecting horse and bike trails provide a variety of terrains and distances.
