Shaman Knob

Overview

The Mt. Irish Archeological District is a large area with many boulder piles and low bands of cliffs covered with petroglyphs. Shaman Knob is one of the major public petroglyph sites in the district and consists of an isolated boulder pile. Native peoples etched an extensive array of nice petroglyphs on the rocks. The BLM placed four numbered markers around the site, and the BLM and Lincoln County each produced brochures describing the numbered petroglyph panels (BLM brochure; Lincoln County brochure).

Listed here are details of Site 1. This site includes most of what can be seen on the west half of Shaman Knob, as petroglyphs are scattered throughout. Perhaps, however, this site consists primarily of four areas. The top-center of the rock face has a number of petroglyphs, including several rectangle-style Pahranagat Man images. The left most spot is a boulder turned on the side, apparently having broken off and rolled sideways. The middle spot is the petroglyph on the boulder behind the marker sign. The right spot is a rock shelter with grinding slicks on a bench inside where ladies sat in the shade grinding meal. Be sure to spend a few minutes looking around.
