Gray Wolf (Canis lupus)

General Information: Mexican Wolves (Canis lupus baileyi) are big dogs with a long snout and a tail that is bushier than most domestic dogs. The color generally is rusty with black on the back. The Mexican Wolf is a subspecies of the Gray Wolf and is smaller than its northern cousins (about the size of a domestic German Shepard dog).

Taxonomy: Mammalia (mammals), Carnivora (flesh eaters), Canidae (dogs)

Technical Description: Head and body to 5 ft; weight to 80 pounds.

Breeding: Live and breed under a complex social system.

Diet: Wolves eat anything that doesn't run faster than they do, but their diet mainly consists of ground squirrels, rabbits, carrion (the meat of dead animals), deer, and plant matter.

Range: Formerly from New Mexico and Colorado south into Mexico; wild populations extirpated from the U.S. but have been reintroduced into eastern Arizona.

Preferred Habitat: wilderness forests.

Where to Find: Don't look for wild Mexican Wolves around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them on trips to eastern Arizona and places farther south. Alternatively, look for them at the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum

Comments: Coyotes are social creatures, usually living in packs. They hunt socially, with members of the pack spreading out to scare up prey items, and then individuals taking turns running it until it is exhausted and caught.
