Spring Azure (Celastrina ladon cinerea)

General: Spring Azure Butterflies (Celastrina ladon) are small, sexually dimorphic, and change color during the year. Upper-side of males blue, although it shows best when they are flying. Color lightens as the season progresses. Underside light gray with variable black dots. Females have black at outer edges of the forewing.

Taxonomy: Family: Gossamer-wing Butterflies (Lycaenidae); Subfamily: Blues (Polyommatinae).

Distribution: Occurs throughout most of North America.

Comments: Celastrina ladon cinerea occurs on Mt. Charleston.
