Black-tailed Gnatcatcher (Polioptila melanura)

General Description: Black-tailed Gnatcatchers (Polioptila melanura) are tiny blue-gray birds with a black tail. a thin, pointy beak, and a narrow white eyering. Breeding males have black on the top of the head, but non-breeding males and females have a gray head.

Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Polioptilidae.

Favored Habitat: Desert scrub.

Where to Find: Black-tailed Gnatcatchers are birds of the desert scrub and brushy canyons. Look for them at Corn Creek and Willow Springs. The Henderson BVP is another good place to check, as they are fairly easy to see in the shrubs surrounding the ponds.
