Description

Searchlight City Park is a small urban park with grass, trees, and a few pieces of playground equipment for the local kids. It has, however, what the surrounding desert does not -- it has trees and water (after the sprinklers go off). This isn't a birding hotspot, but it is a place to see a few desert species, and it is the easiest place in Nevada to see Curve-billed Thrashers. eBird lists 94 species for this park.

Check the trees and lawn in the park, and consider walking the nearby streets. Stay off private property and don't stare into people's windows, but check the trees and shrubs for other interesting birds.

Location

Searchlight City Park is located on the southeast side of the main intersection along Highway 95 in downtown Searchlight.

The easiest way to get there from Las Vegas is to drive south on Highway 93/95/I-11 past Henderson. When Highway 95 splits off, stay right towards Searchlight. Continue south on Highway 95 into downtown Searchlight.

From Highway 95, turn left onto Cottonwood Cove Road (this is the intersection where Highway 164, Nipton Road, turns right). Continue east on Cottonwood Cove Road for two blocks to Lincoln Street or continue one more block to Nevada Street where there are signs for the park.

Turn right onto Lincoln Street (or Nevada Street) and drive south for one block. At the next intersection at Hill Street, the park is ahead on the left or right (depending on the street used). The park takes up most of one city block, so drive around the park and find a good place to park.

Specialties

This park most likely will be full of House Sparrows, House Finches, and Eurasian Collared Doves, but this is the easiest place in Nevada to see Curve-billed Thrashers. Also watch for White-winged Doves, Greater Roadrunners, flycatchers, and the odd Hooded Warbler.
