General: Like other beetles, the True Weevils are hugely diverse, representing seven families and many thousands of species. Weevils are recognized by their (usually) small size (usually only to 1/4 inch; 6 mm), long snout, and antennae that come off the snout. In the True Weevils, the antennae appear to have an elbow.

Desert Broad-nose Weevils (Ophryastes desertus) are relatively large weevils that feed on shrubs in arid lands of the Southwestern US. There are 35 species in the genus Ophryastes. (subfamily Entiminae). Note that this individual has its antennae tucked into a grove on the side of the face.
