Vesper Sparrow (Pooecetes gramineus)

General Description: Vesper Sparrows (Pooecetes gramineus) are medium sized, sexually monomorphic, streak-breasted sparrows. They are light gray-brown above, light below, have white outer tail feathers, and have a bold white eyering. They also have a rusty patch on the shoulder, which is not often seen. The ear patch is dark and bordered with bold white lines below and behind.

Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Emberizidae.

Favored Habitat: Open desert with shrubs where they can run on the ground.

Where to Find: Around Las Vegas, look for Vesper Sparrows during winter at Red Rock Canyon NCA, Corn Creek on the Desert National Wildlife Range, and the Duck Creek ponds.
