Black-and-White Warbler (Mniotilta varia)

General Description: Black-and-White Warblers (Mniotilta varia) are small, sexually similar songbirds. They have a black-and-white striped face and body, but generally they are more black above and more white below. Males have a black throat.

Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Parulidae.

Favored Habitat: Deciduous and mixed forests in the eastern U.S. and central and eastern Canada. Winters in variety of habitats in the southern-most U.S. south into northern South America.

Where to Find: During migration, Black-and-White Warblers can be found anywhere with trees, but they are uncommon around Las Vegas. Don't look for them, but keep an eye out when birding in places like Corn Creek , Floyd Lamb, and the Henderson BVP.

Comments: Unlike most warblers, this species forages by climbing on trunks and branches of trees looking for insects.
