General Description: Mexican Jays (Aphelocoma wollweberi) are noisy blue jays without a crest. The head, back, and tail are blue, and the underparts are light gray. The throat and upper chest are unmarked.

The subspecies in southern Arizona, the Arizona Mexican Jay (Aphelocoma wollweberi arizonae) is pale blue, while the Texas Mexican Jay (Aphelocoma wollweberi couchii) is darker blue, especially on the head.

Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Corvidae.

Favored Habitat: Pine-Oak woodlands in middle-elevation mountains of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, then south into central Mexico.

Where to Find: Don't look for Mexican Jays around Las Vegas. Rather, look for Arizona Mexican Jays in Madera Canyon, the Chiricahua Mountains, and other places in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. Look for Texas Mexican Jays in Big Bend National Park, Texas.
