Eastern Kingbird (Tyrannus tyrannus)

General Description: Eastern Kingbirds (Tyrannus tyrannus) are large, sexually monomorphic flycatchers. Overall, they are dark above, light below, and have a white band across the tip of the tail. The black on the top of the head contrasts sharply with the white throat.

Kingbirds are "fly catchers," and often can be seen flying out from a perch to catch an insect in the air, then returning to the same perch to look for another passing bug. Sometimes they catch things on the ground, and they eat fruit too.

Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Tyrannidae, Tyranninae.

Favored Habitat: Open woods with perches from which to catch flying bugs.

Where to Find: Eastern Kingbirds are found throughout the United States except for the southwestern deserts. Occasionally one wanders into the Las Vegas Area. Look for them during migration, but don't expect to see them anywhere.
