General Description: Marsh Wrens (Cistothorus palustris)
are small, reddish-brown wrens with a bold eyeline, white streaks
on the upper back, and a big voice. Follow the voice and hope for
a glimpse of them down in the reeds.
Favored Habitat: Ponds and marshes with cattails and bulrushes. |
 |
Where to Find: Marsh Wrens hide in
the reeds, so look for them around ponds and marshes with reeds and
other shoreline vegetation. Visit neighborhood ponds,
parks (e.g., Floyd Lamb State Park), and the Henderson
Bird Viewing Preserve. To find them in more natural
habitat, visit the Pahranagat
Valley or the Overton Wildlife Management Area.
Comments: Usually heard long before
seen, listen for the long, variable series of notes that sometimes
seems to go on forever from deep in the reeds. |
