General
Description: Eastern Phoebes (Sayornis phoebe) are
small-sized, sexually monomorphic flycatchers that usually occur east
of the Rocky Mountains (an eastern species), but occasionally get out
west.
Adults are dark above with a darker head, wings, and tail. The sides of
the upper breast are usually dark, and the belly and center of the
breast are light. These flycatchers lack wingbars and lack an eyering.
Eastern Phoebes are "fly catchers," and often can
be seen flying out from a perch
to catch an insect in the air, then returning to the same perch to look
for another passing bug. Sometimes they catch things on the ground too.
