General
Description: Calliope Hummingbirds (Stellula calliope)
are
tiny green and red birds with long bills that hover in front
of
flowers and
feed on nectar. Calliope Hummingbirds are the smallest North
American birds, and for hummingbirds, they have a short bill and
short tail (the folded wings extend beyond the tip of the
tail). Males have an iridescent gorget (throat
feathers) formed of red stripes. Females have a white throat with lines
of
tiny red dots.
Favored Habitat:
Mountains to the west and north of Las Vegas.
Where to Find:
Around Las Vegas, keep an eye out for them during migration, but don't
expect to find then anywhere.
Comments:
This species is a migrant through the Las Vegas area.
