American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus)

General Description: American Bitterns (Botaurus lentiginosus) are medium-sized, brown-streaked herons with a black whisker mark. Bitterns sometimes hide in the marsh by standing still and raising their bill high tomatch the reeds or cattails in which they are hiding. If there is a breeze, bitterns will gently sway back and forth to match the swaying of the reeds or cattails in the breeze. in flight, the end of the wing is black.

Favored Habitat: Around Las Vegas, marshes and ponds.

Where to Find: American Bitterns are not common around Las Vegas, but keep an eye out for them while birding marshy places with reeds such asthe Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, the Pahranagat Valley, and the Overton Wildlife Management Area.
