General: Stiff Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium demissum) is a member of the Iris family that grows from a bulb in marshy areas. The leaves are grass-like (long and thin), and the 6-petaled flower is blue with purple veins and a yellow center.

Stiff Blue-eyed Grass is an uncommon component of marshy areas in the Upper Sonoran (Mojave Desert Scrub and Pinyon-Juniper Woodland) and Transition (Yellow Pine Forest) life zones. Look for this species in the meadow at Calico Basin in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Note that the boardwalk around the meadow is intended to keep people from trampling this species.

Plant Form: Upright, bunchgrass-like, from a bulb.

Height: Usually to about knee-high (about 18 inches).

Flowers: Blooms during spring and early summer. Inflorescence: solitary flowers atop stalks. Flower: 6 petals, blue with purple veins and a yellow center.
