Mega Road Trip to Far-Eastern Canada, June 18
June 18

June 18, 2014. L'Anse aux Meadows to Pistolet Provincial Park

We didn't move very far today. Got up and out of the hotel in time for the 9:30 AM guided history talk at the Norse village site. We learned early on that the people here were not Vikings because "viking" is a verb. When Norse-men go "viking," they go on a "rape and pillage" excursion. They are not vikings, they go viking. At any rate, we found the museum, the restored village, the guide, and the living history fascinating -- and stayed until well after lunch.

We then moved south some 35 road-kilometers to Pistolet Provincial Park. Here, we got a campsite, then drove out to Burnt Cape Ecological Reserve. An odd place, the cape is a nearly barren limestone ridge (with the appearance of having been burnt over) where 300 species of unusual plant grow. We drove out a gravel road that felt like we were in Death Valley, then walked out to the tip of the cape. Although we are a bit early in the blooming season, we saw lots of interesting flowers.

We are still blown away at the sight of icebergs clogging up the harbors, and out at sea, there are some very large bergs floating by.
