Oregon Trip, Day 2 -- November 17, 2011

Day 2. Drive from Silver Peak, NV, to Honey Lake Wildlife Management Area, CA.

In the morning, which was well below freezing, I drove through the town of Silver Peak, a mining town with a long history in the area. Back on Highway 95, I drove north to Walker Lake and made several stops to do some birding. Over 90% of the birds were American Coots, but ducks and grebes were present too. Continuing, I detoured off Hwy 95 to Yerington and Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area. The area has lots of ponds, wetlands, scattered trees, and prairie, all of which are good for birds and other wildlife. The day was getting long, so I just looked around and headed north. I made it to Pyramid Lake at sunset, and finished the drive in the dark on dirt roads leading into California. I stopped for the night in the campground at Honey Lake Wildlife Management Area. The night was only cold, but the winds were fierce.
