Thanksgiving in Texas -- Nov. and Dec. 2010

Day 28, December 11. We left the state park early and hit the road starting home. As usual, however, events overtake plans. Liz regretted not getting a T-shirt at the state park headquarters the day before, so we thought we could get one at the park entrance station on the west side. Well, it turns out the park entrance is actually Fort Leaton State Historic Site, and while they do not have the T-shirts Liz wanted, they have a very talkative head guy who cornered us with interesting tales of the site, the local community, and many of the past and current characters. After seeing the excellent exhibit hall on the human history of the area, we were worried he would corner us again on the way out; but alas, he had to close the office area early and make a run to the bank before it closed on Saturday. Such luck -- we saw the buildings and headed out.

Finding ourselves leaving the fort at lunch time, we drove the few remaining miles to Presidio, Texas, in search of food. The old and sleepy border town was surprisingly busy, but we found out way to El Patio, which was a small restaurant full of people. It appears that this was the place to go with the family on Saturday afternoon. The food was great, but the staff was a bit short. Even so, it was great food, but the combination of being waylaid at the fort and a long lunch almost put our goal for the day out of reach. We made good time and drove later than usual, making it all the way to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, where we found a room for the night.
