The Big House at the Walking Box Ranch was built by Hollywood silent film stars Clara Bow and Rex Bell in the early 1930s. They lived here, raising two boys, until the mid-1940s when they moved to Las Vegas. The ranch property changed ownership several times, and in the 1990s, it was used as an executive retreat by a mining company that rehabilitated and remodeled parts of the house. The area currently is owned by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and managed by University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV) Public Lands Institute.

The area is watched by a caretaker, and three law enforcement officers live onsite in travel trailers. The site is available for researchers, but otherwise it is closed to the public until the old buildings and facilities are restored.
