Overview

Birdspring Peak is a 3.7-mile round-trip hike to a peak overlooking Red Rock Canyon NCA and the Las Vegas Valley that makes for a very pleasant, easy, off-trail adventure in a scenic place. Views from the summit are surprisingly grand for such a low peak, and the area is loaded with interesting fossil shells, corals, and sponges.

The regular route, described elsewhere, starts on an old road that goes a bit out of the way and adds about 1/2 miles, round-trip, the the hike. The alternate start to the hike is presented on this page.

The Hike

From the trailhead parking area, the Alternative Route runs 30 yards farther down Cottonwood Valley Road (Alt. 01), then turns north on a faded old road. A few paces north, the route joins a bike trail. Turning right, the route follows the bike trail a few yards southeast, but only far enough to find an easy way through the shrubs and into the Goodsprings burn area.

Running across the open burn area, the Alternative Route runs northeast up an open canyon, passing below (Alt. 02) a rocky outcrop on the left and continuing up the canyon. In this area, it is easier to stay on the north side of the canyon rather that follow the wash too closely. Continuing northeast, the Alternative Route joins the old road of the Regular Route (Alt. 03) and continues to the saddle (Wpt. 02).

There is no trail here, not even a game trail. Hikers should practice a low-impact technique where each person walks a slightly different path, thereby spreading out the footprints rather than trampling a single line that would scar the landscape.
