Hiking Around Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
Blue Diamond Hill Fossils
Blue Diamond Hill Fossils

Overview

Blue Diamond Hill is full of Paleozoic fossils that record the lives of invertebrate animals dating from the Ordovician (about 470 million years ago) to the end of the Permian (about 250 mya).

Hikers can look for corals, sponges, brachiopods, and crinoids, and the best places to see them are Fossil Canyon (sometimes called Echo Canyon) and the Rock Garden Trail. A nice loop (Fossil Canyon - Fossil Ridge Loop) using these two trails makes a nice 2.5-mile adventure in the desert. Fossils can be found everywhere on Blue Diamond Hill, but this seems to be the best area.
