Devil's Throat

Overview

Devil's Throat is an interesting, if somewhat disconcerting, geological feature where the roof of a large limestone cave collapsed, leaving a huge sink hole in the middle of the open desert. For those who think terra firma is firm, this is an educational place to visit that gives a different point of view.

Watch Out

Other than the standard warnings about hiking in the desert, ... well, all I can say is don't fall in the hole. This is a wild and remote area, and there are no services out there.

While hiking, please respect the land and the other people out there, and try to Leave No Trace of your passage. Also, this is a remote hike, so be sure to bring the 10 Essentials.

Getting to the Trailhead

Devil's Throat is located out in the Gold Butte Region at the northeast end of Lake Mead, about 2.5 hours northeast of Las Vegas in a wild, remote, and scenic area.

From town, drive out to Gold Butte. From Whitney Pockets (Table 1, Site 060), drive south on Gold Butte Road for 7.25 miles to a signed turnoff to Devils Throat and the Red Bluff Byway (Site 070). There are no additional signs to guide you at road intersections, but you can see the chain-link fence that surrounds the sink hole from the main road. Turn right onto the side road and drive more-or-less straight southwest for an additional 0.4 miles to Devil's Throat parking area (Site 310), which is adjacent to the chain-link fence that surrounds the sink hole. Park here; this is the trailhead.

The Hike

From the trailhead (Table 2, Waypoint 01), walk over to the chain-link fence. If there really is a hike here, it is only around the sink hole, a distance totaling about 600 feet.
Devil's Throat Devil's Throat sink hole is huge! This is about as close to the edge as you can get on the west side. Staying outside the fence, it is hard to photograph the sink hole.
