The Fire Water Tank at the Walking Box Ranch provides a ready supply of water for fire fighting at the ranch and in the surrounding desert area. One of the caretaker's daily responsibilities is to ensure that the tank is full of water, which means climbing the ladder to look inside (or just looking at the water-level indicator on the backside of the tank). The area currently is owned by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and managed by Friends of Avi Kwa Ame. The area is watched by a caretaker, and three law enforcement officers live on-site in travel trailers. The site is available for researchers and occasional tours, but otherwise it is closed to the public.
