Overview

There is a nice petroglyph panel in Mud Wash, about 4 miles down a high-clearance vehicle road from the unpaved Gold Butte Road. The panel is not large or extraordinary, but it is nice and worth a visit if you are in the area.

The panel is located high on a wall, which is odd, and depicts a variety of images ranging from abstract art (e.g., spirals, wavy lines, dots) to stick figures (e.g., humans, coyotes, and bighorn sheep). This panel was defaced by shooters; please respect petroglyph sites and report damages or damaging activities to the BLM. Parking is right at the base of the wall.

Location

The Mud Wash Petroglyph panel is located out in the Gold Butte Region northeast of Lake Mead, about 2.5 hours northeast of Las Vegas.

From Las Vegas, drive out to Whitney Pocket at the end of the paved Gold Butte Road (Table 1, Site 60). Continue south on the unpaved Gold Butte Road for 7.25 miles to the Mud Wash, Devil's Throat turnoff (Site 070).

From Devil's Throat turnoff (Site 070), turn west towards Devil's Throat, but just before getting there, turn to the right (northwest) at a fork, and continue on that road until it drops into Mud Wash. Continue down the wash, which usually is a fine road, to the petroglyph panel. For details of getting there, see the description of Mud Wash Road.

On the way out or the way back, be sure to stop and see Devil's Throat.

Hours

The area is always open, but it should be considered day-use only. There are no campsites.
