Rill - A backroad feature where storm waters flow across a road and leave a deep, narrow, steep-sided ditch (the rill) rather than the more normal washed-out dip in the road. As can be seen in the photos, they rarely look as bad as they really are, but because they run across the road, they tend to catch both front wheels at the same time, and then both back wheels, giving the vehicle quite a jolt and occasionally breaking axles.
