C-17 Globemaster III Transport Jets are huge cargo aircraft capable of carrying combat-ready military units to any point in the world on short notice and then provide field support to sustain the force. The aircraft has a cargo capacity of 170,900 pounds and cargo compartment dimensions of 12.25 feet high; 18 feet wide; and 88 feet long. The aircraft is operated by a crew of three (pilot, copilot, and load master). Cargo is loaded through a rear door that accommodates vehicles and palletized cargo. Designed to operate on small airfields, the C-17 can land and take off on runways as short as 3,500 feet and turn around on a 90-foot wide airstrip.
C-17 Globemaster III Transport Jets are recognized by their huge size but relatively short body (compare with C-5), and upturned wing tips.
